Middleton Project

Over the last 12 months Development Officer Michael Nuttall has been busy delivering coaching sessions to children at 4 local schools. This was all part of the Middleton Engagement Project sponsored by the South Leeds Inner Community Committee. Over 216 hours of tuition has given the children an introduction to our great game. As well as receiving coaching the children and their families attended the rhinos game and will be making more visits throughout the season. Michael commented “The feedback has been fantastic and the children loved been rewarded with their Hunslet t-shirts. We have also signposted local junior Clubs so the children can carry on playing” The success of the project has been rewarded with a similar project been sponsored in Beeston starting this summer.

Teacher comments –

Clapgate Primary – Eleanor Beaumont
“Both staff and children have benefited from the coaching by Hunslet RLFC. Children’s rugby skills as well as their team working skills have improved, teachers have gained a deeper understanding for delivering rugby and the children responded well to the coaching. Pupils were keen and made to feel proud to represent school at the competition.”

Middleton St Marys – Dawn Kellet
“The children have learnt new skills and to have discipline staying in a line and working as a team. They know the importance of covering space and moving as one and ensuring options are available all the time. They have learnt to tackle safely within the laws of tag”

Middleton St Philips – Katy Hall
“It was fantastic having Michael into our school to deliver Rugby sessions to our KS2 pupils. Rugby is not an area of expertise for our members of staff, meaning previously the children had a limited experience of this sport. Michael had a good manner with the children and provided well structured sessions that allowed them to progress, within a few weeks I saw a fantastic difference in the children’s confidence and ability in Rugby. The children really enjoyed working towards the tournament which was well organised and a fantastic opportunity for children who would not otherwise take part in such events”

Westwood Primary – Barry Frankland

“Having Michael in delivering rugby sessions has been an excellent opportunity for our teachers and pupils, not only have the sessions benefited the pupils knowledge on rugby but also the teachers now have a more clear understanding on the delivery of rugby. Michael provides high quality of delivery during every session and it shows with how well the pupils have progressed with their rugby skills over the year. The sessions he delivers target areas of each child’s strength’s and weaknesses and we cannot thank him enough for the work he has done”
